AI Search Visibility: Is Your Business the One AI Recommends?

AI search visibility is how often, and how well, a business shows up in AI answers, such as ChatGPT’s replies and Google’s AI Overviews. For Australian service businesses, it can decide whether you make a customer’s shortlist before they ever visit your website.

In June 2026, technology analyst firm Telsyte reported that 12 per cent of Australians say AI tools are now their primary way of finding information online. A year earlier, it was 5 per cent.

At Dash, we build websites and marketing for service businesses, and a pattern we see is a business that is successful offline and invisible online. The work is good, the Google reviews are good and the phone still rings.

But when a customer asks an AI tool who to call, the business isn’t in the answer. A free visibility audit shows you where yours stands.

How has the buyer’s journey changed?

Diagram comparing the buyer's journey through search results with research done inside an AI answer

In 2014 I wrote on the Dash blog that the way customers find a business, and decide who to buy from, had changed drastically. Back then the shift was from the phone book to searching online. It’s happening again, and this time the shift is to AI.

For years, a customer’s research ran through search results. We mapped the stages in 2018: awareness, consideration and decision.

Someone becomes aware of a problem, looks at ways to solve it, then compares the businesses that can help. At each stage they searched, clicked through to a website, went back to the results and clicked again.

Now the first half of that journey can happen inside an AI answer. A customer can learn what the problem is, compare the options and get a shortlist without visiting a supplier’s website.

In a 2025 US study, Pew Research Center looked at what people clicked on Google. Those who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional search result in 8 per cent of visits, against 15 per cent for those who didn’t.

What hasn’t moved is the booking. People still hire the actual business, often the one AI kept suggesting. By the time someone clicks through to your site, they are closer to buying.

Search isn’t dead, but its job has changed

There’s a popular idea that search engines are dying, websites get no traffic and you can’t win work online any more. For a service business, it misses what’s really happening.

What’s changing is the volume and the quality of the traffic. Fewer people click through while they are researching, so total visits from search can fall.

The people who do arrive are further along and closer to booking. If your business isn’t the one being recommended at that point, you can miss out entirely.

So the job for your business now has two parts. One is AI search visibility through the research. The other is a website that makes you easy to choose when the customer finally clicks.

Why do established businesses become invisible online?

An established business can become invisible online without doing anything wrong. It grew on referrals, word of mouth and good reviews, and its website was built a few years ago for the way people searched then. The phone still rings, so it’s easy to miss search visits falling away.

Some businesses have no analytics on their website at all, so there’s no record of the fall. Others have the numbers but no time to look at them.

I believe the best businesses deserve to be the first choice in their market. It’s unfair when they struggle to stand out.

How do you check your AI search visibility?

There are four checks you can run yourself. First, ask the questions your customers ask, the way a customer would, in ChatGPT or on Google.

For example: “Who are the best termite control companies in Darwin?” Note whether your business is named and your website cited, and who is named instead.

Second, look at your numbers. If your website has analytics, compare visits from search over the last few years. Without analytics, set it up now so you have a baseline.

When the business is growing and enquiries are healthy, you may not need anyone’s help. For most businesses, that isn’t the case.

Third, check that your website is easy for search engines and AI tools to read. It shouldn’t block them, it should explain clearly what you do and where you do it, and it should answer the questions customers ask before they buy.

Fourth, check the places that list you. Your Google Business Profile and the other websites that mention your business are part of your visibility too, and fixing them can be the biggest opportunity of all. Dash’s do-it-yourself visibility workbook takes you through each check, step by step.

What changed for Northern Rock Pest Control?

Northern Rock Pest Control is an established Darwin business with plenty of Google reviews. When Dash audited its online presence and AI visibility this year, its traffic from search was in decline, and it wasn’t visible to AI.

The Northern Rock Pest Control website, built by Dash

Dash started with an audit and a plan, then built a new website from the ground up. It uses structured data, the behind-the-scenes code that tells search engines and AI tools what a business does and where. Its pages answer the questions customers ask, such as “How do I get rid of rats in my roof in Darwin?”

The site went live at the end of July. Within a week, when we asked Google who the best termite control companies in Darwin are, its AI answer linked to Northern Rock’s website.

Google’s AI answers were also citing the site on questions like whether ticks are a problem in Darwin. Now Northern Rock appears throughout the buyer’s journey, and AI recommends it regularly to its ideal customers.

Why is October a good time to plan?

October is a good time to plan next year. Start now and your priorities are set before the year begins. Wait for the December quiet, and you’ll be a quarter into next year before the work pays off.

Book a free visibility audit with Dash

If you’d rather have the checks done for you, book a free visibility audit. It’s a 20-minute call.

You give Dash your website address when you book, and we run the audit before we talk. We check your website, your Google Business Profile, the other sites that list you, and where you show up in search and AI answers.

On the call, you’ll hear where you stand and your biggest opportunity first. Afterwards you keep the report as a PDF. Like the rest of our work, the audit uses AI for the legwork, because AI helps our clients get more done with limited resources and budgets.

From there, you can work through the fixes yourself. Or Dash can plan, build and run the work with you, from digital strategy to a new website and ongoing support through our Marketing Support Program.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how often, and how well, a business appears in AI answers, such as ChatGPT’s replies and Google’s AI Overviews, when people look for advice or a recommendation. Dash’s free visibility audit checks it alongside a business’s website, its Google Business Profile and the other websites that list it.

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. Search engines still send customers to businesses, but more of the early research happens inside AI answers, so fewer people click through before they decide. In Dash’s experience, the visitors who do arrive are closer to booking, so being the recommended business at that last step matters more.

How can I increase my business’s AI search visibility?

Make your website easy for search engines and AI tools to read: don’t block them, use structured data, explain clearly what you do and where, and answer the questions customers ask before they buy. Then fix your Google Business Profile and your listings on other websites. Dash’s free visibility audit shows which of these matters most for your business.

Why is my website traffic from Google going down?

One common reason is that more of the early research happens inside AI answers, so fewer people click through before they decide. Technical problems, such as pages search engines can’t read, can also cause a drop. Dash’s free visibility audit checks your website and where you show up in AI answers.

Do I need a new website to show up in AI answers?

Not always. A new website was the answer for Northern Rock Pest Control in Darwin, but for another business the biggest opportunity might be its Google Business Profile or its listings on other websites. Dash’s free visibility audit names the biggest opportunity first, so you know where to start.

What does Dash’s free visibility audit include?

The free visibility audit from Dash is a 20-minute call. Before the call, Dash checks your website, Google Business Profile, the other sites that list you, and where you show up in search and AI answers. On the call you hear where you stand and your biggest opportunity first, and afterwards you keep the report as a PDF.
