Google to Use Responsive Web Design and Mobile-Friendly Features as Key to Rankings

You may have heard that Google is making changes to the way they order their search results. They actually do this regularly, however, the next round of changes will have a larger impact than most updates in recent memory. Google have announced that they will be giving an extra boost to mobile-friendly web pages.

What the changes involve

Starting April 21 of this year, Google will be updating their algorithms to use mobile-friendliness as one of the signals when ranking search results. Google's view is that the mobile user should get the same experience as a traditional desktop user without frustrations in check-out, navigation, and other features. In the future, having a mobile optimised website will directly impact your ability to appear prominently in Google's search results.

To help website owners prepare for the update, Google has created a mobile-ready test you can use to see if your site is optimised for mobile users. You can use the tool to test any page on your website. With a single click Google will analyse the page, give you a mobile readiness score, and provide any suggestions for improving the performance of your page.

You can try the mobile-friendly test tool for yourself at https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/.

As you make changes, you can keep checking your site to see if your actions have corrected the issues. This handy tool will save you a lot of guesswork when it comes to increasing the effectiveness and visibility of your mobile site.
